Mixtures

Soy Supreme

Triticale

Soybeans (and other legume row crops) are not the most competitive plants and this cover crop mix was designed with this in mind. Cereal rye, triticale, and winter oats provide aggressive growth from planting until termination, leaving behind a mat that weeds struggle to penetrate. Soybeans can fix their own nitrogen, so no legumes are necessary in this mix. The daikon radish will aerate the soil, mine for nutrients, and quickly build organic matter.

Mixture Components

Cereal rye

Cereal rye establishes quickly and grows through the colder season. It degrades slowly during the summer, so it provides an excellent weed mat.

Triticale

A cold-tolerant small grain with a wide leaf that grows in cooler weather providing growth in the mid and late winter. Typically produces a seed head 2 weeks to 4 weeks after cereal rye.

Winter Oats

Winter oats survive colder temperatures but remain vegetative longer than cereal rye. They degrade faster during the summer, returning the collected nutrients and quickly beginning organic matter buildup. They have excellent root mass for breaking up compaction.

Daikon Radish

This radish establishes quickly and puts down an aggressive taproot, addressing soil compaction and mining for nutrients that may be quickly lost. It develops a tuber throughout the growing season that pushes up above the soil, accumulating carbon and other nutrients that will be available when it winter kills or is terminated in late spring.

Planting Instructions

Drill at 0.25 - 0.5” depth. Calibrate your drill to ensure you have an accurate rate. Broadcasting without incorporation is not recommended due to seed size. Target planting at a minimum of 30 days prior to frost to allow radishes to establish.
