Millet

With its dry stalk, millet is one of the easier summer annuals to use for a multi-cut dry hay system. It tolerates a broader range of soil conditions than sorghum sudan or sudangrass and has better-tillering capacity than the sorghums, but do grow in height a little slower.  Millet does not run the risk of prussic acid poisoning, is safe for horses, and is not affected by the sugarcane aphid.

    Japanese Millet

A millet that can be used for forage or summer cover crop. It does better in wet soils than many of the other summer annuals. Fast growth and a fibrous root system makes it an excellent cover crop. It has a finer stem than pearl millet and sorghum and makes high quality forage for grazing or hay.

    Proso

Proso millet is one of the most drought tolerant and cost effective annual grasses. It is the shortest growing millet though it grows taller in the northern plains than it might in the central or southern plains. Heading out in less than 60 days, this is a great plant for game bird mixes.
